Sturgeon, which adorned our fishermen’s stalls 40-50 years ago, and which was included in the economy and culture of our country Çarşamba at the beginning of the last century, is in the Northern Hemisphere, where it has existed due to human negativities created by human beings in the last fifty years, and especially all over the world. It has been taken under protection by facing the danger of extinction on the Black Sea coast. Protection programs related to sturgeon in the world have been included in local, national and international programs and Çarşamba Municipality has been included in these protection programs.
At the beginning of the last century, there is serious information about sturgeon and caviar production in the records and documents related to Çarşamba. In the light of this information, especially in the early 1900s, sturgeon fishing and the black caviar trade, which is carried out accordingly, are among the important economic activities of our country.
My dear friend Güven GENÇ, who has succeeded in presenting the recent history of fishermen and fisheries in Samsun and the Black Sea in an original way with his work titled “The Hidden History of Fishermen from Samsun”, this time with his work named “Sturgeon Fish” 1905-2016, the Precious of Çarşamba. carries out an important study that ensures the transfer and registration of sturgeon, which has an important place in the culture and economy of our region in the recent past, to the present and future generations. At the same time, I would like to thank him for this work, which has a record value for our local culture and history.
As Çarşamba Municipality, we have been working for the last two years and plan to put it into service in 2017; One of the thematic elements of our Yeşilırmak Natural Life Park project, which claims to be one of the most comprehensive projects in its field, will be sturgeon. The most important area where the sturgeon performs its natural breeding migration within the borders of our country is undoubtedly Çarşamba. In addition to this, we, as the municipality, carry out important works in order to support the natural life in the area from the Yeşilırmak mouth to Kumköy, where the sturgeon is used for breeding migration, and which is located in the city center of Çarşamba. In the second phase of our Yeşilırmak Natural Life Park project, sturgeon production facilities are also included in the project.
I would like to express my gratitude for the author’s efforts and support in research, meetings, field studies, studies with the Ministry of Agriculture and universities that have brought the sturgeon to the agenda of our district and the region in recent years.
