Sturgeons are fish that have been fighting for their lives in the world for over 200 million years.Today, hunting is prohibited because they are in danger of extinction due to human-induced reasons.Sturgeons live only in the seas and fresh waters of the northern hemisphere of the world. They migrate to large rivers to breed. For example, the rivers of our country, Yesilirmak, Kizilirmak and Sakarya, form the breeding grounds of these precious fish, famous for their black caviar. Here, Guven Teacher’s passion for sturgeon started in Samsun-Carsamba, where Yesilirmak meets the Black Sea.In his own words, “No living creature on earth has affected him as much as a sturgeon”. Guven Teacher, who had the opportunity to observe sturgeon and hunting since his childhood, has contributed to the literature as two valuable works over the years, his observations and research on sturgeon throughout his life. The books titled “The Hidden History of the Fishermen of Samsun 1935-2014” and “Sturgeon”, The Precious of Çarşamba 1905-2016“ contain very valuable information about the hunting and current situation of these fish, which are extremely valuable in terms of biological diversity in our country’s waters.
I would like to thank Mr. Guven Genc, a friend of Sturgeon Fish, for his two valuable works that shed light on the history of sturgeon in our country’s waters, an area where written sources are extremely limited. I hope he continues his passionate research on sturgeons.
