Mr. Guven Genç’s passion for Sturgeons and the Black Sea
Known as the precious of the Black Sea, Sturgeon Fish is of great importance in terms of being a highly demanded fish species in international trade in terms of economy and culture, its income for our country and its being among the important economic activities of our country in black caviar traden. In recent years, it has faced the danger of extinction due to hunting and human negativities. Although measures such as hunting bans, quota application and stock replenishment have been taken since the 1950s to combat this situation, poaching could not be completely prevented and the stocks continued to decrease rapidly despite all the precautions taken because caviar was very valuable.
The current situation of our esteemed brother, Guven Genç, who has researched the importance, cultural and scientific value of sturgeons and has a great share in transferring them to our generations, in his work titled “The Hidden History of the Fishermen of Samsun 1935-2014″ and “The Precious Sturgeon of Çarşamba 1905-2016” Valuable information about it has been frequently mentioned.
Mr. Güven Genç’s Sturgeon Fish commemorative coin was placed on our agenda and included in the 2021 commemorative coin issuance planning. As a country with the natural habitat and breeding environment of these precious Sturgeons, of which three species are extinct and other species are about to become extinct, two of his works, which organize studies to ensure the continuation of the generations of these fish, which are of great importance in terms of the protection of both natural beauties and biodiversity, and shed light on the history of our country’s waters.
